Working Online Pros and Cons at big AEC (Architectural-Engineering-Constructing) Projects:
Both simple and complex projects designed by a diversity of Design Disciplines that have to meet schedules, phases and submissions are all exposed to the same DANGERS…
Working Online Pros and Cons – What might go WRONG?
In every AEC Project, You’ll find the Architectural/Landscaping to be the LEADING Design and many Engineering Design Disciplines, to follow.
That means that every specific point along the Project Timeline is to be paid much attention:
To let the Engineers work flow freely, Decisions are to be taken: When and Where to Stop, Freeze the Leading Design to let All the Engineers Complete and Adapt their Design – that is Always Based on The LEADING DESIGN .
Of course – Always – something CAN Go Wrong and It Probably Will if not AVOIDED:
A Designer can adapt his/Her Design, to a wrong file used as an external reference…Meaning the Orchestra is Playing without Conduction.
Working Online Pros and Cons – What are the OPTIONS?
- We could keep working locally and Upload 2-3 Times till the file is ready to Submit
- We could work online as if we were all sitting in the same room and VIRTUALLY sharing the same file server
- We could go somewhere in between…take the best modern approach.
I’m checking “CAD2WIN” App from the Autodesk APPSTORE – it’s a simple way to approach Microsoft SharePoint from within AutoCAD and it just might improve the current Project’s Situation.
I like the Options covering Modifications like When/By Whom…
Finally I like the Version Control Options offered in the CAD2Win Framework. After a Few deeper exploring I’m going to the Trial Phase and I’ll be reporting if Success is Achieved.
Working Online Pros and Cons – What would be considered SUCCESS?
The ability to have a quick glimpse and verify that all Subs are working on the right version of the Other Subs’ External References Source Files! Sleeping Better the night before the Submission(s).
